Chain Mail - COMPLETE

Postby Mawgy » Fri Mar 25, 2016 1:56 am

So, starting a new thread as I have decided to branch out from scale mail into chain mail, and already regretting it. 4 hours in and have made a square.

This is gonna be for an SD. I've used the same size rings as I do for the small scales which fit SD/SSD. I started this project on a whim, so just picked up rings I had lying around. Not sure if these are the right size/guage rings to use for the project, but hopefully will look good in the end.

Here is the section I did today
Image

Laying on a 64cm SD. The length just hits the waist so gotta lengthen and widen, and add sleeves, and shoulders, and just kill me now.

And using supplies I had lying around, I didn't calculate how many rings I would need, and as it turns out, I don't have enough. Will need to buy more soon.
*sigh*

Wish me luck!

Hmmm, woops- fell behind in updating this project as well :(

April 23:
Have doubled the length of the square I started a month ago. Woo progress!

One long piece

At current width it fits an SD (shown below), though the ring size used looks a bit big for an SD, so with the 2nd opinion of a friend, decided to make the armour for an SSD.

April 28:

Made it wider for an SSD. Too wide as it turns out. Clearly I cannot win.
But ultimately figured since mine is a a slim SSD, I won't take any rings apart so it can fit bulkier dolls as well.

And, if all else fails, use it as a throw:

1400-ish rings used so far. Need to double that to give the shirt length, create shoulders and a neck line, and add arms. Kill me now,

May 7:

For something different, I'm opening and closing rings.
I'm about a 1/3 of the way through and my motivation is dropping like a stone. If I ever finish this project it will be a miracle as I don't seem to be getting anywhere on a day to day basis. I am seriously hating chain mail and will never do one again. Scales it is for me.

Got quite a pronounced callous on my ring finger from this project.

Two long lines

Well, the two pieces have been woven together. Unfortunately I made a mistake and will need to undo half a line. Gaaaaaah!
3,823 rings now used. Kill me.

Modelled by a Soom Mecha Angel

Shoulders have been attached. Neck and arms to go.
Shown here on a 70cm Dikadoll.
Will be so happy when this shirt is done.

It's a little tighter on an 80cm mecha angel, but fits all the same
Image

Neckline is done. Arms yet to go.
Image

Not quite done, but very close now
Image

According to weight, 5,700 rings used. I can tell you, it felt like it!

Annnnd, I'm out.
